Prof Eddie’s Brief

I am Professor Eddie (Edward) Oparaoji, a distinguished scholar, crown prince and thought leader with a multifaceted career spanning academia, industry, and public service. With my rich background in pharmaceutical sciences and healthcare, I have made significant contributions to medical research and education through several scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals, supervised 15 doctoral theses and presented at several major scientific meetings. A few of my widely cited original, published clinical research works, include “Aminoglycoside volume of distribution in postoperative patients with septic shock”; “Appropriateness of a 4 mg/kg gentamicin or tobramycin loading dose in post-operative septic shock patients”; “Aminoglycoside pharmacokinetics in African-Americans with the normal renal function”; and “Cost Benefit Analysis of Monitoring Serum Vancomycin Concentrations in a Teaching Hospital”.  These works have contributed significantly in revolutionizing antibiotic dosing in critically ill patients and other special patient populations.

My work extends beyond the confines of my professional expertise, as I am deeply committed to issues of justice, equity, and good governance. I have pursued these interests through my activities as Chairman, the Nigerian-American Coalition for Justice and Democracy, Washington DC; Chairman and advisor. Nigerian-American Leadership Council (NALC); Chairman Mbaise Policy Roundtable, New York, USA; Chairman, Board of Trustees, Amuzi Development Fund (ADF); Grand Patron Amuzi Progressive Union (APU), Abuja Branch; Chairman, Eastern Mandate Union (EMU)-Abroad, Chairman, Imo Global Alliance for Good Governance (IGAGG), among others. I was also the leader of the Nigerian Democratic Awareness Committee (NDAC), Eastern Mandate Union (EMU)-Abroad and a Chieftain of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO)

As a passionate advocate for human capital development, I founded the Eze Cletus and Ugoeze Dorothy Oparaoji Memorial Education Foundation (ECUDOMEF) – a non-profit organization that enhances the quality of life of the underprivileged Nigerians, especially the youths, widows and orphans, through facilitation of access to affordable purposeful education and quality healthcare services. This organization has awarded over 500 scholarships to deserving students in Imo State as well as sponsored many free medical and educational outreach and other poverty alleviating programs, since its inception in 1990.

My travel and exposures included representing the pro-democracy movement at key conferences, including the Council on Foreign Relations, New York; Norwegian Council on Africa, held in Oslo; Center for Strategic and International Studies; Carnegie Endowment for International Peace; Amnesty International; US Department of State; and the United States White House, all in Washington DC. I led the task force for developing the MKO Abiola “Farewell to Poverty” task force – the strategic governing document for then President-Elect M.K.O. Abiola’s aborted administration. I am a recipient of numerous coveted awards for excellence, for my professional, community service, and civil society contributions. These include: I am among the Top 50 Nigerians in the US and Canada, and appointed Nigeria’s delegate to the 66th, 67th and 68th UN General Assembly (UNGA), in 2011, 2012 and 2013 respectively. Nigerian- American Coalition for Justice and   Democracy

The Nigerian-American Coalition for Justice and Democracy (NACJD) is an organization dedicated to advocating for justice, democracy, and human rights, particularly about Nigerian and Nigerian-American communities. The coalition was formed in response to the ongoing challenges faced by these communities both in Nigeria and the United States, aiming to provide a structured platform to address issues of injustice and promote democratic values.

NACJD was established in the early 2000s, amidst a period of political and social upheaval in Nigeria. This period saw significant movements advocating for democratic governance and human rights in Nigeria, as well as an increase in the Nigerian diaspora’s involvement in international advocacy. The founding members of NACJD included Nigerian Americans who were passionate about leveraging their unique position to influence both American and Nigerian policies to support democracy and justice.

The primary purposes of NACJD include Advocacy for Human Rights: NACJD works to highlight and combat human rights abuses in Nigeria. This includes campaigning against corruption, police brutality, and violations of civil liberties. The organization seeks to bring international attention to these issues and advocate for policy changes that promote human rights.

The coalition supports the development and maintenance of democratic institutions in Nigeria. This involves monitoring elections, promoting transparent governance, and supporting civil society organizations that work towards democratic reforms.

It provides a platform for Nigerian Americans to engage in advocacy and activism. It helps mobilize the community to participate in political processes, both in the United States and Nigeria, ensuring their voices are heard on issues that affect them.

The organization conducts educational programs to inform both the Nigerian diaspora and the broader American public about the political and social issues in Nigeria. This includes seminars, workshops, and public forums that discuss the importance of democracy and human rights.

We seek to influence U.S. foreign policy towards Nigeria. By engaging with policymakers and ensuring that U.S. policies promote justice, democracy and human rights in Nigeria.

It collaborates or  Partners with other human rights and democracy organizations to amplify their efforts and impact. It Issues statements and reports that highlight abuses and propose solutions, aiming to inform and influence public opinion and policy. It hosts events that bring together Nigerian Americans to discuss and strategize on advocacy efforts.

Impacts on Nigerian democracy

Over the years, NACJD has played a significant role in bringing international attention to issues in Nigeria. Its advocacy efforts have contributed to the broader movement for justice and democratic governance in Nigeria, and it continues to be a vital voice for Nigerian Americans committed to these causes. Through its persistent efforts, NACJD has helped to build a more informed and active diaspora community, ready to engage in the fight for justice and democracy both in their homeland and abroad.

The Nigerian Justice system and its application

The Nigerian justice system, like those of many countries, is a complex amalgamation of historical influences, contemporary legal practices, and evolving societal norms. It operates within the framework of a federal republic, meaning that there are both federal and state judicial systems, each with its own set of courts and jurisdictions. Regardless of which part of it you find yourself, the general perception and experience is that our justice system is for the highest bidder,

One of the most significant challenges is the pervasive corruption within the judiciary. This affects the impartiality and efficiency of the courts, undermining public trust in the justice system.

The courts are often overwhelmed with a backlog of cases, leading to delays in the administration of justice. These delays can sometimes span years, denying timely justice to litigants.

Many courts lack adequate infrastructure and resources. Insufficient funding for the judiciary hampers its ability to function effectively..

Even when judgments are made, enforcement can be problematic due to bureaucratic inefficiencies and sometimes deliberate obstruction by powerful individuals or entities.

There is a significant disparity in access to justice between urban and rural areas and between the wealthy and the poor. Legal aid services are limited, making it difficult for indigent citizens to navigate the legal system.

Efforts are being made to address the challenge of Judicial reforms aimed at reducing corruption, improving case management, and increasing transparency have been initiated. For instance, digitalizing court processes and records is one step towards reducing delays and increasing efficiency. Additionally, there are ongoing initiatives to enhance the training and capacity of judicial officers and to ensure better funding and resources for the judiciary.

In summary, the Nigerian justice system is a multifaceted entity grappling with various challenges but also striving for improvement. Its effectiveness is crucial for upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice for all citizens

Your expectations from this event

That the ordinary citizens who were denied victory in the 2023 election would be recognized, celebrated and inspired to soldier on, keep fighting and never relent!

Award sustainability being driven by Diaspora Nigerians

That perception of this being driven from outside the country is incorrect. The driving force is the situation on the ground in Nigeria. Nevertheless, we are collaborating with our members from both sides of the Atlantic to keep the troops motivated so that they will never give up. We are in this effort for the long haul as long as bad governance persists. This year our focus is on the 2023 elections, the next edition could be on good governance private sector innovation, or something else of common interest. So sustainability is already guaranteed!

Diaspora Nigerian’s contributions to democracy and governance at home

Diaspora Nigerians have significantly contributed to democracy and governance in Nigeria through various channels, including remittances, advocacy, and intellectual exchanges. Remittances from Nigerians abroad play a critical role in bolstering the economy and supporting local communities. These financial inflows not only aid individual families but also have a broader economic impact by fostering economic stability and development. This financial support can empower citizens, enabling them to participate more actively in democratic processes and hold their leaders accountable. Additionally, Nigerian expatriates often engage in advocacy and lobbying efforts to influence foreign policy and international perspectives on Nigeria. This international advocacy can put pressure on the Nigerian government to compel it to adhere to democratic principles and human rights standards.

Beyond financial contributions, the concept of “brain gain” is pivotal. Many highly educated and skilled Nigerians in the diaspora return home, bringing with them invaluable expertise and experience gained abroad. This reverse migration helps to fill critical gaps in Nigeria’s healthcare, education, and technology sectors, promoting better governance and public service delivery. These returning professionals often introduce innovative practices and ethical standards, fostering a culture of transparency and accountability. Moreover, through initiatives like mentoring programs, knowledge-sharing platforms, and collaborations with local institutions, diaspora Nigerians help to build capacity and enhance the skills of their counterparts at home, further strengthening the foundations of democracy and good governance in Nigeria. Culled.
