APGA Chairman, Ezeokenwa Suggest National Living Wage, Improve General Welfare Labour Union
Trade Unions or Labour union emerged from the efforts of workers to seek improvement on existing working conditions through collective actions.
They function to provide social, economic, political and psychological benefits for their members as well as the platform for participation in managerial functions in the industry.
In Nigeria today’s labour unions are no more mere bargaining agents or lobbyists but rather transformed into a social movement through which the working class has promoted mass democracy.
In the face of persistent agitation for wage increase, the APGA National Chairman, Barr. Sly Ezeokenwa, examines the factors that propel wage agitation; and the challenges NLC faces in the clarion call for wage increase

He empathizes with the labour union and citizens’ agitation for a national living wage and improved general welfare, recognizing the challenges faced by Nigerians. The party believes that:
National Living Wage:
– Reflects the true cost of living in Nigeria
– Should be pegged at a reasonable percentage above the poverty line
– Must be regularly reviewed to address inflation and economic changes
General Welfare:
Healthcare: Improve access to quality healthcare, reduce medical tourism, and increase health funding
Education: Free and compulsory education up to secondary school, with a focus on quality and infrastructure
Social Security: Robust social security system, including unemployment benefits and pension reforms
Infrastructure: Invest in roads, power, water, and transportation, creating jobs and stimulating growth
Economic Empowerment: Support small businesses, entrepreneurship, and job creation, with a focus on youth and women empowerment
The National Chairman, supports the labour union and citizens’ demands for:
– A living wage that addresses the poverty and economic realities in Nigeria
– Improved working conditions and social protection
– Increased investment in public services and infrastructure- Strengthened labour laws and protection for workers’ rights
The party is dedicated to working with interested parties to resolve these issues and build a more prosperous and just Nigeria for all.
Recall that the labour union began its strike a week ago and had relaxed the strike for a few days now. As a result, the parties involved have been able to relax for a few days, allowing them to quickly review the demands in an effort to help resolve the majority of them.
This crucial issue is being urgently attended to by the National Assembly, the Secretary of the Government of the Federation, and all other relevant parties in order to maintain national unity.
